I found a illustration of the Church Calendar- it's egg-shaped & has small boxes with the words "1S, 2S". Why?
The Church Calendar I found was different from the usual pie graph we study at school. It's egg-shaped, had different colors, there were boxes where words like "1s, 2s, 3s" and "Ash Wednesday" were written and on the inner part was written if it was during Ordinary time, Advent, etc. I tried searching it on the net but I had no luck. I looked up our books but I hadn't found anthing either. Now our CVE teacher is making us research about every detail on this Church Calendar/ Liturgical Cycle. I need help! Thanks a lot...
I'm guessing that the 1s, 2s, 3s, etc are abbreciations for 1st Sunday, 2nd Sunday, 3rd Sunday, etc.
I don't know how much abou know about liturgical calendars, so I apologize if anything I'm telling you is something you already know.
There are different colors used for the vestments & paraments during different liturgical seasons and days. As a general rule:
Green - Ordinary time
Purple - Advent, Lent (often different shades of purple are used)
Red - Pentecost, Palm Sunday, various martyrs' feasts
Black - Feast of All Souls
Rose - Gaudete Sunday (3rd Sunday of Advent)
White - Christmas, Easter, Feast of All Saints
White is also often used on various feast days of the Virgin Mary and of the apostles. Red is often used for Feasts of Our Lord's passion, blood & cross.
Hope this helps point you in the right direction!
